Now that you can form basic sentences in Spanish, it’s time to learn about stem-changing verbs and spelling changes that occur in the present tense. These verbs do not follow regular conjugation patterns but are common in everyday Spanish.

4.1 Stem-Changing Verbs

Stem-changing verbs have a spelling change in their root (stem) in the yo, tú, él/ella/usted, and ellos/ellas/ustedes forms but not in the nosotros/vosotros forms. These changes occur in three main patterns:
