Coming with a Partner Who Isn't Studying Spanish? Here's What They Can Do

By Ritmo del Río

SAN RAFAEL, Antioquia — You've found the perfect Spanish immersion program. It's in a nature reserve, three hours from Medellín, with a river running through the property, conservation activities, and a small community of international travelers. You're ready to book.

But there's one question holding you back: What will your partner do all morning while you're in class?

At Ritmo del Río, the answer is simple. They're welcome to come, and they'll have just as meaningful a time as you will.

Non-Studying Guests Are Welcome

We understand that not everyone in a couple wants to study Spanish. Maybe your partner already speaks it. Maybe they'd rather spend the day hiking, swimming, or reading by the river. Maybe they just want a break from their own routine.

Whatever the reason, your partner or friend can join you at our lodging-only rate. They'll have access to:

  • Our 14-hectare nature reserve, with jungle trails and natural swimming pools

  • The crystal-clear El Macanal river, right on the property

  • All non-academic activities, including yoga, salsa, and Afro-Colombian percussion

  • Our organic farm, where they can help or simply learn

  • Farm-to-table meals at our restaurant

  • Birdwatching and nature walks with our resident biologist

They won't be sitting around waiting for you. They'll be having their own adventure.

A Day in the Life of a Non-Studying Guest

While you're studying, your partner can sleep in, enjoy a slow breakfast, swim in the many natural river pools, explore the nature reserve, or read in the library. You'll reunite for lunch, including fresh veggies from our organic garden. Afternoons are for hiking, permaculture workshops, or booking an external tour together. Evenings bring salsa, yoga, or a quiet moment by the river.

Your partner can also book paid activities through our local partners, like canyoning, cacao tours, hiking, and tubing. But the ecolodge itself is full of free things to enjoy: the river, a ping pong table, a library, guitars, and hammocks. Only external tours cost extra, and they're optional.

And if you want to learn almost anything, we have you covered. Both you and your partner can book a massage, or take music lessons with the musicians who live here. Want to learn English, French, or German? We have teachers for that too. We also offer artisanal weaving, sculpture, natural oil making, and almost anything else you can imagine.

Beyond the reserve, San Rafael and its surroundings offer waterfalls, hikes, and the simple pleasure of drinking a beer in the plaza while watching authentic Colombian life go by

What Makes This Different

Most Spanish schools aren't designed for couples where only one person is studying. They assume everyone is there to learn the language. That's not how real life works.

At Ritmo del Río, we're not a typical Spanish school. We're a nature reserve, an ecolodge, and a community. That means there's room for everyone, whether you're conjugating verbs or watching monkeys from the hammock.

And because we're in a developing tourist circuit, we can offer this experience at a fraction of what it would cost in other countries. The region also offers adventure sports, cultural villages, waterfalls, and more.

For both of you, the program includes three meals a day at our restaurant, with vegetables and herbs from our organic garden. Full board, full relax

A Note on Who Comes Here

Our guests tend to be travelers who value depth over party scenes. Many are women over 35 who travel solo, seeking safe and meaningful experiences. Some are couples. Some are friends. What they have in common is a desire for something authentic.

If you're looking for a party hostel, this isn't it. If you're looking for a place where you can learn Spanish while your partner discovers their own version of Colombia, this is exactly it.

Ready to bring your partner along? Write to us and we'll help you plan the perfect stay. One of you learns Spanish. Both of you fall in love with the reserve.
