Solo Travel After 40: Why You Deserve More Than a Party Hostel

By Ritmo del Río

SAN RAFAEL, Antioquia — You've traveled enough to know what you want. Maybe you've opened yet another Spanish school website and felt your heart sink—the photos are all twenty-somethings doing shots, the dorms are packed with bunk beds, and the whole vibe screams "spring break" rather than "meaningful journey."

Does it feel like every travel experience is designed for 20-year-olds on a gap year? You're not alone. And you deserve something different.

The Invisible Traveler

Women over 40 who travel solo are one of the fastest-growing segments in travel—and one of the most underserved. You want:

  • A safe place where you can relax completely

  • Comfort—a real bed, hot water, good food

  • Depth over noise; conversation over parties

  • Meaning—the sense that your presence matters

  • Good Spanish classes tailored to how adults actually learn

  • Connection with nature—real experiences, not manufactured fun

You don't want to feel like you're crashing someone else's frat party. You want to feel welcomed, respected, and at home.

A Different Kind of Spanish School

Ritmo del Río sits on a 14-hectare nature reserve three hours from Medellín. The crystal-clear El Macanal river runs through the property. You cross a suspension bridge to enter, and from there, jungle trails lead to natural swimming pools, hammocks, and incredible wildlife .

We're an ecolodge, an organic farm, a restaurant, and a language school, all in one. We're not a party hostel. We're a place to breathe, learn, and reconnect with what matters .

You Won't Be Bored—But You Won't Be Doing Beer Pong Either!

Here's what a typical day might look like:

  • Sunrise birdwatching — Wake up early with our biologist to spot colorful birds in the canopy. More than 300 species call this reserve home.

  • Spanish class — Personalized 1-on-1 instruction, tailored to your level and goals.

  • Afternoon river walk — Put on your swimsuit and join our biologist in the El Macanal river. Learn how to tell a clean river from a contaminated one—a hands-on lesson in ecology and Spanish vocabulary.

  • Sunset salsa — End the day with salsa dancing as the sun dips behind the jungle.

  • Night walk with UV flashlights — When darkness falls, grab an ultraviolet flashlight and discover what the jungle hides at night. Scorpions glowing under UV light, nocturnal creatures you'd never see otherwise. This isn't a party (but you can still get 2×1 coctails everyday at the bar!).

  • Other days you might join a yoga class, learn Afro-Colombian drumming, or help set up trap cameras to monitor wildlife.

There's always something happening. Although taking a nap in a hammock might be the best plan.

Comfort You Deserve

Accommodation: Choose your comfort level at our beautiful ecolodge. You can book a private room with your own terrace and river views, or stay in our comfortable shared dorms (max 4 people) with hot showers. We offer both because we know that for women over 40, privacy and comfort are a priority.

Food: You won't have to think about food. Our programs include three meals at our delicious restaurant: full board, full relax. We serve fresh meals including some veggies and eggs from our garden. Colombian and international dishes, including homemade sourdough bread, pastries, and fresh juices. Vegetarian and vegan options are always available .

The Setting: We've found what might be the best climate in the world—warm days, cool nights, no extreme heat, very few mosquitoes. You can eat outdoors year-round, sleep comfortably, and never worry about the weather ruining your plans.

Learn Spanish the Way Adults Learn

Our classes are private 1-on-1 sessions, tailored completely to you. No feeling rushed or left behind. Just focused, supportive instruction at your pace.

One of our students shared: "I had been a bit worried about being a 'mature' student among young backpackers, but I shouldn't have been worried, as students are from many countries and of different ages."

Give Back While You Learn

Your stay directly supports conservation. We protect the endangered white-footed tamarin (Titi Gris)—a primate that exists only in a small part of Colombia—along with pumas, ocelots, and more than 300 species of birds .

Traveling leaves a footprint. A round-trip flight from the US or Europe to Colombia generates about 1.4 metric tons of CO₂ per passenger. At Ritmo del Río, your stay helps offset that, you're not just learning Spanish, you're helping heal the land.

Your Community Awaits

Whether you're 25, 35, 45 or 65, traveling solo or with a friend, you'll find a warm, inclusive community at Ritmo del Río. Our guests come from all over the world, united by a desire to learn Spanish, connect with nature, and have a meaningful experience.
